Night Operations
- Episode: 24
- Version: 0.1.3
In this episode
Elena and Jonah prepare a personal night VFR trip from fictional Meadow Ridge to Harbor Field, with Pine Valley available as a planned alternative. The lesson follows preparation, taxi and climb, navigation, and a runway arrival over dark terrain. Weather and equipment-failure variations test decisions already prepared on the ground.
- Distinguish sunset-to-sunrise position lights, the civil-twilight night definition, and the one-hour night recent-experience window. Assess proficiency for the actual flight after checking currency.
- Allow dark adaptation, use off-center scanning, and prepare readable cockpit lighting and accessible personal equipment.
- Verify terrain, weather, route, fuel, airport lighting, NOTAMs, and a suitable alternative before departure.
- Use the airport’s actual pilot-controlled lighting frequency and instructions, then verify the expected runway pattern.
- Apply the inoperative-equipment workflow, then Elena’s stricter personal landing-light minimum.
- Identify steady position lights and flashing anticollision lights before applying their different use rules.
- Interpret PAPI and two-bar VASI indications within verified coverage, cross-check altitude and airspeed, and use a go-around when runway position or altitude is uncertain.
- Recognize fading-light weather cues and the added arrival demands of electrical or engine failure. Darkness alone does not identify suitable landing terrain.
